PayPal President David Marcus tweeted about his belief in Bitcoin, even though his company has yet to integrate the digital currency and is blocking the sale of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin payment processor BitPay announced a new payroll API. “For the longest time the hard question was ‘How do I buy bitcoin?’” said Tony Gallippi, co-founder and CEO of BitPay. “Now the answer is easy: ‘Ask your employer.’”

We are at CES 2014 this week! Read our preview of Bitcoin companies attending and exhibiting CES 2014. The presence of Bitcoin companies is small, but it’s an important milestone for the digital currency.

Serial entrepreneur and angel investor James Hong weighed in on his thoughts about storing Bitcoin securely. His wallet of choice was BitGo, which uses multi-signature technology so that no single key can be used to steal funds.

The Blockchain turned 5 last week. We looked back at the Genesis Block, the first 50 BTC sent to Satoshi.

And William Shatner started a tweetfest about Bitcoin. He said he’s going to buy some of the digital currency soon.

Here is a roundup of the top Bitcoin news from last week.

The most popular Bitcoin mobile app ZeroBlock was acquired by Bitcoin wallet company Blockchain.info. Blockchain.info sees mobile as a key part of its strategy going forward and has had some troubles with Apple. “When I’m asked what’s the killer app for Bitcoin right now I always recommend ZeroBlock,” said Nicolas Cary, CEO of Blockchain.info.

Overstock.com made headlines with an announcement that it will start accepting Bitcoin next year. CEO Patrick M. Byrne explained why he wants to accept Bitcoin and said that price volatility doesn’t worry him.

We’ve seen regulatory troubles in China over the last few weeks, leading to a price collapse. But it’s important to know that Asia’s richest man, Li Ka-shing, has invested in Bitcoin payment processor BitPay through his venture firm Horizon Ventures. He previously invested in Facebook, Spotify, Siri, Summly, and other successful startups.

We highlighted the top news stories from November 2013. Spoiler alert: our coverage of the Senate Committee hearings on Bitcoin was read a lot!

A Bloomberg reporter showed the private key from his Bitcoin paper wallet on TV. Oops! The $20 from that wallet was stolen soon after. The reporter, Matt Miller, had a good sense of humor about it though.

The price of Bitcoin crashed on reports that the People’s Bank of China banned payment processors from allowing deposits from RMB into Bitcoin.

Later in the week, BTC China CEO Bobby Lee penned an open letter to his user base about the recent developments in China and launched a new cold storage product called Currency Lock. Lee is still searching for alternative ways for investors to deposit RMB into BTC China.

Real-time network PubNub launched a solutions toolkit for building your own Bitcoin pricing app. We interviewed CEO Todd Green who declared that there should be no more Bitcoin fail whales. PubNub also announced a partnership with Bitcoin exchange Mt.Gox.

In the biggest funding event ever for Bitcoin, popular cloud-based wallet Coinbase raised $25 million from prolific venture capitalist firm Andreessen Horowitz. Coinbase now has over 600,000 customers transacting Bitcoin.

Back in Las Vegas, BTCChina CEO Bobby Lee took the stage to explain why China is #1 for Bitcoin trading. In a thoughtful and in depth presentation, Lee explained the cultural, political and regulatory factors that have contributed to recent growth.

Practicing lawyer and Bitcoin expert Marco Santori walked the Inside Bitcoins audience through the regulatory requirements for Bitcoin companies. We published an extensive article detailing the difference between FinCEN and state money transmission license requirements, as well as both compliance and avoidance strategies.
